Ghana’s Black Stars look set to add to their numbers in the Premier League to match the presence of the Super Eagles of Nigeria thanks to Brighton and Hove Albion’s transfer move for Mohammed Kudus.
The versatile midfielder who plays his best football in the attacking half of the midfield has spent the last three years of his senior career at AFC Ajax in the Dutch Eredivisie. In that time, he has grown into one of the world’s most promising midfield talents.
The Black Stars gem is now close to joining up with the Seagulls in English football’s top flight.
Kudus to join Tariq Lamptey and other Black stars in England
Black Stars and Super Eagles players have long dominated the African contingent in English football.
The Premier League has seen the likes of Nigeria’s Jay Jay Okocha, John Mikel Obi and Kelechi Iheanacho, as well as Ghana’s Anthony Yeboah, Michael Essien and the late Christian Atsu.
Nigeria has the edge in terms of records and trophy wins but with more influx of Ghanaian players, the status quo could change soon.
Mohammed Kudus is one such player who can change the status quo.
The 23-year-old is a brilliant midfielder who possesses the ability to play as a box-to-box midfielder, a central midfielder, a 10/8, on the wings and a centre forward. He is an asset to coaches.
Kudus is now set to join one of the most interesting and expressive teams in the Premier League, Brighton, who beat the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal to the player’s signature.
The former Nordsjælland man is set to cost the Seagulls £34.5 million in transfer fees, which will be their club record spend on a single transfer.
The move will see him join fellow Black Stars talent Tariq Lamptey at the AMEX. Both of them will come up against Ghana national teammates Jordan Ayew and Jeffery Schlupp of Crystal Palace, and Arsenal’s Thomas Partey.
More importantly for Kudus, his development is set to be stepped up under Roberto De Zerbi, which is good news for fans of the Black Stars ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
How Brighton could line up with Black Stars midfielder Kudus
Brighton have been busy this summer in the transfer market. The addition of Black Stars player Mohammed Kudus to the team – contractual details of which are still being ironed out in the negotiation room – will see them have added seven new players.
Kudus, however, will only have the existing Seagulls players and Romanian youngster Adrian Mazilu to deal with as he tries to find his place in the team. But with the exit of Japan international Kaoru Mitoma looming, Kudus could walk straight into De Zerbi’s lineup.
The Italian coach has favoured attacking formations, particularly an attacking version of the classic 4-4-2. Kudus will take up the role of the wide midfielder in such a situation.
When they play with three attackers, he will most likely be on the right side of the attack.
