The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), the Kenya Premier League and the Premier Soccer League (PSL) of South Africa are some of the best leagues in the African continent.

Clubs from these three leagues have in time past conquered club football, earned respect and exported players abroad who got breakthrough seasons while at these clubs in Africa.

The issue of prize money has been a fascination and a mouthwatering prospect for clubs in various leagues in Africa and around the world.

Leagues that have good sponsorships have a far-reaching prize money pool spread across participating teams that gets even much better for those who finish in the top three and especially for the winner.

Let's have a look at the prize money obtainable in African leagues like the PSL, NPFL and the FKF league in order for us to have a comparative understanding of the league that wins when it comes to prize money.

NPFL Prize Money

The 2023/24 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season will commence on 30 September 2023.

It is no longer news that the winner of the season in review will pocket ₦150 million which is about $192,423. This is a 50% improvement from last season's prize money where the champions Enyimba took home ₦100 million.

Improved sponsors and partners for the new season has resulted in tremendous changes in the NPFL. The champions will not only get a staggering amount in prize money but also a great deal of the matches will be broadcasted as AI powered cameras have been installed across stadiums in the country to stream NPFL games for the 2023/24 season.

Fans can stream the matches from the NPFL Live App which is now available on the Play Store for download, especially for the Android users.

20 teams will jostle it out for the ultimate prize of ₦150 million. The question is which team will nick it?

PSL Prize Money

The PSL prize money is the most attractive in Africa. No other league on the continent pays as much money to its winner than the PSL.

There are 16 teams that battle for the DStv Premiership, also known as the PSL, every season. The league's governing body will reward the 2023/24 league champions R15 million ($780,000).

This goes a long way to explain the reason why the PSL is a very competitive league and ranks high on the African continent.

Mamelodi Sundowns has dominated the league in the past couple of seasons, and they're already running away with the current 2023/24 league title as they've looked heads and shoulders above the rest of the clubs in South Africa.

FKF Premier League Prize Money

Unfortunately, the 2023/24 Kenya Premier League that began in September, 2023 is yet to have a prize money.

The winners of the last two campaigns went home with absolutely nothing. It's unbelievable that clubs in Kenya have played club football under the Football Kenya Federation for nothing.

Sources from the East African country say that the lack of a prize money for the league is due to the fact that the league has no sponsor. However, there have been promises of that changing this season and time will tell if the reports come to pass.

NPFL vs PSL vs FKF Premier League prize money: Who wins?

We have outlined the various prize money for winners of these three leagues and it's easy to come to the conclusion that the Premier Soccer League of South Africa is on a league of its own as far as the prize money pool is concerned.

The staggering amount the PSL winner gets coupled with the fact that teams that finish in the top four all have substantial amounts to pocket home, makes the league really competitive.

The reason for this is largely due to its sponsorship by DStv, making it one of the most televised leagues in Africa and also one of the most popular with a great deal of followership and acceptance in South Africa.
