Bayer 04 Leverkusen fans are celebrating Victor Boniface goals this season more than they have celebrated any striker’s goals in a season. This is because the former Royal Union Saint-Gilloise man is scoring valuable goals and not just racking up numbers.

Boniface first wore the Bayer cross in an official match in August 2023 after swapping Belgium for Germany. While at Union SG, he played a key role in them reaching the quarter-final of the UEFA Europa League. They could not go any further but he finished with six goals as the joint top scorer in the competition with Manchester United man Marcus Rashford. It was enough to convince Xabi Alonso to fork out €20 million for the Nigerian striker.

The pressure of a bigger league has not gotten to him as he continues to soar high. Die Werkself is already punching above their weight because of him. They finished sixth last season and now, they are top of the German Bundesliga table after eight games (seven wins and one draw).

The expectation was that Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund would challenge for the title as usual, but thanks to the goals from Boniface, Leverkusen are the front runners.

Bundesliga.com have likened the 22-year-old, six-foot-two striker to Robert Lewandowski. They claim he is an all-round centre forward, good with both feet, physically powerful, good in the air, and a surprisingly good dribbling ability.

He became only the second-ever player – and first since Erling Haaland in January 2020 – to win both the Bundesliga Rookie of the Month and Player of the Month awards in the same month when he collected both gongs for August 2023. With seven Bundesliga goals this campaign, he ranks third on the top scorers chart.

As Bayer Leverkusen welcomes Freiburg next in Gameweek 9, the fans will expect him to deliver the goals again or at least contribute to the team's quest to maintain their unbeaten run and position on top of the table.

The Bayer Leverkusen striker debuted for the Super Eagles in an AFCON qualifying match against São Tomé & Príncipe on 10 September 2023, which falls in the 2023/24 season.

It was a dead rubber as the Nigeria national football team had already sealed their ticket to Ivory Coast, but he made the most of his cameo appearance, as he recorded an assist for Samuel Chukwueze. Nigeria won the game 6-0.

He was also involved in the October 2023 international games where he scored one goal – the first of hopefully many – in two matches.
