Mokwena comes from a family of footballers

He is the son of former Orlando Pirates player Julias Sono, and nephew to Jomo Sono, Mokwena hails from a footballing family and started his professional coaching career in the youth systems at Silver Stars, before first serving as an assistant manager at Mamelodi Sundowns. In 2019, he became an interim manager of Orlando Pirates, holding the position for five months, before being appointed as the head coach at Chippa United the next year.

After leaving Chippa United, he co-coached Mamelodi Sundowns from 2020-2022 before taking over the helm as main manager.

A coach who was never a footballer

His first emergence to the football scene was when he played for Silver Stars, currently known as platinum stars. He honed his skills under coaches such as Steve Komphela, Cavin Johnson, and Allan Freese during his youth years.

While the 36-year-old Rulani Mokwena comes from a family of footballers, he himself wasn't one. Failing to advance beyond youth football, the Johannesburg native attended school, following which his parents insisted on him pursuing a career in law which he later did not but opted to pursue a career in coaching which he is one today.
