Bradley Carnell was born on 21 January 1977 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

He is a former professional footballer who made a name for himself as a talented defender.

Carnell currently serves as the head coach of Major League Soccer (MLS) side St. Louis City.

Bradley Carnell early career

Carnell's journey in football began during his schooling years at Parktown Boys' High School in Johannesburg.

Starting as a goalkeeper, he showcased immense talent and played for Southern Suburbs and Robertsham Callies juniors.

His transition to a defender happened later, and he continued to excel in the sport.

He received coaching from former Southampton, Hereford United, and Cheltenham Town winger Terry Paine during his district-level appearances.

Bradley Carnell's professional debut came at a remarkably young age of 16 in 1993 when he played for Wits University.

He soon made his mark when scoring twice as Wits upset Kaizer Chiefs in the 1995 Top Eight final.

Thereafter he had stints at Kaizer Chiefs (1997–98), VfB Stuttgart (1998–2003), and Borussia Mönchengladbach (2003–05).

His greatest success came during his time at Stuttgart, where he contributed to winning the league silver in 2003.

He also had the honour of representing South Africa at the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

In July 2009, he made a move to F.C. Hansa Rostock, and on 13 July 2010, he returned to South Africa to sign for SuperSport United.

Carnell ultimately decided to retire from professional football on 27 August 2011.

Bradley Carnell coaching career

Bradley Carnell transitioned to coaching after retiring as a player.

On 28 March 2017, he was appointed as the assistant coach of the New York Red Bulls in the MLS.

His coaching journey continued to progress, and on 5 September 2020, he was named interim head coach for the remainder of the 2020 regular season, following the firing of Chris Armas.

On 5 January 2022, Carnell took on a new challenge as the first head coach of St. Louis City SC, a newly formed MLS team.

The team's inaugural season kicked off in 2023, and Carnell has made a remarkable impact, leading St. Louis City to an impressive first-place position in the Western Conference table at the time of writing.

Carnell's team is amassing an impressive 56 points and boasting a remarkable goal difference of +19 with one game left in the regular season.
