Emmanuel Dennis was the Nigerian star of the week as he bagged a goal and two assists for Watford.
Dennis and Troost Ekong were the only Nigerians on the winning side in the Premier League on Saturday.
It was goals galore in the English Premiership this weekend, and it was heartwarming to see Nigerian players getting in the mix.
On Saturday, the Premier League witnessed 30 goals. The goals came from five home wins, an away win and two draws.
Winners and top performers
Manchester United marched their ramshackle army to Vicarage Road on Saturday afternoon. Following the defeat at the hands of Manchester City before the international break, a reaction was what United fans wanted to see. United fans were, however, treated to a hammering spearheaded by a vibrant Emmanuel Dennis.
The Hornets took the lead through Joshua King in the 28th minute, off an Emmanuel Dennis assist. The goal came after Ismaila Sarr had missed a penalty. Ismaila Sarr scored the second before the end of the half. Donny van de Beek halved the deficit in the second half before Emmanuel Dennis gave another assist to Joao Pedro for the third. Emmanuel Dennis got in on the act with a late goal to seal a 4-1 win over United.
William Troost Ekong came on for Watford in the 64th minute to replace Nicolas N’koulou.
St. James Park served a thriller with goals galore as Newcastle and Brentford locked horns in a game that finished a draw.
The two teams went into the break with a 2-2 score-line as Lascelles and Joelinton (Newcastle) and Brentford’s Ivan Toney and Rico Henry scored the goals.
Nigeria’s Frank Onyeka came on in the 59th minute. Two minutes after coming on, Frank Onyeka saw his strike take a huge deflection to beat the goalkeeper for Brentford’s third goal. The goal was, however, credited as an own-goal.
The losers and benchwarmers
Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho participated in the 3-0 humbling Leicester City received from Chelsea.
The early kickoff saw Antonio Rudiger, N’golo Kante and Christian Pulisic score.
Wilfred Ndidi was on for ninety minutes, while Kelechi Iheanacho replaced Ademola Lookman at half-time. It was an unusually poor afternoon for Ndidi, who struggled in the heart of midfield for the Foxes. Elsewhere, Lookman did got on the score sheet but was correctly flagged offside.
Crystal Palace and Burnley also produced a pulsating 3-3 draw at Turf Moor, but Super Eagles target Eberechi Eze was not part of the action. Eberechi Eze watched from the bench as Christian Benteke (2) and Marc Guehi scored the Eagles goals.
Michael Olise was a 58th-minute substitute. The Nigerian was a replacement for Ghanaian striker Jordan Ayew.
Nathan Tella was an unused sub as Southampton fell 2-1 to Norwich City. Carney Chukwuemeka was an unused sub as Villa secured a 2-0 win over Brighton & Hove.
Finally, Arsenal were on the wrong side of a 4-0 bashing, but neither Folarin Balogun nor goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo was part of the matchday squad.
