His father, Elder Solomon, was a policeman who was only able to provide just enough to help his family survive. Taiwo found joy in playing football and soon, he got into the Kwara Football Academy.

There he would meet José Mourinho, who was on tour in Africa. It was during this visit and the exhibition tournament which he participated in that led him to be discovered by the much bigger Imperial Soccer Academy, which gave him the necessary push to take his career in the direction it is currently going in at the moment.

Taiwo Awoniyi club career

Taiwo Awoniyi moved to Liverpool in 2015 following a string of success stories thanks to his affiliation with Imperial Soccer Academy, owned by former Super Eagles midfielder Seyi Olofinjana.

However, Liverpool sent him on a string of loan spells across Europe to help him develop, but never really gave him the chance to show the fruits of his development while wearing the club's colours.

Awoniyi played for clubs in Germany, Holland and Belgium before he sealed a move to Mainz 05, another club in Germany, where his fortunes changed. He impressed in the half season he spent with Mainz, enough for Union Berlin to take the risk with him.

Awoniyi put in the performance of his career on loan with Union Berlin, helping them make a mark in their return to the Bundesliga after more than a decade away.

He would sign on a permanent basis and rise to the top of the rankings in the Bundesliga strikers' power list, leading to Nottingham Forest signing him in 2022.

On 20 May 2023, Awoniyi scored the goal that secured Nottingham Forest's stay in the Premier League after a season spent fighting relegation.

A record setting 2023/24 season for Nottingham Forest

On 18 August 2023, Awoniyi became the first Forest player to score in six consecutive Premier League matches since Stan Collymore in March-April 1995.

The Nigerian looks set to help the Tricky Trees maintain their place in the Premier League at the end of the current season with his dazzling displays and overrall team contributions.

At the time of this update, Awoniyi has netted 3 league goals for Forest to take his total league goals to 13.

Taiwo Awoniyi national team career

Taiwo Awoniyi is an alumni of one of the best U-17 teams the Nigerian Football Federation has put together. He played alongside AFCON 2023 squad hopefuls Kelechi Iheanacho and Francis Uzoho.

They won the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates which Victor Osimhen and his mates would defend two years later in Chile. However, it took him until 2021 to make his debut for the Super Eagles thanks to his erratic club career after his successes in the Nigeria youth teams.

He made his debut in a 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier match against the Central Africa Republic. He made the AFCON 2021 squad and led the line for Nigeria at that tournament.
